The method involves detecting an acceleration signal, and evaluating the acceleration signal with an acceleration algorithm with respect to collision of an object with a vehicle. A structure-borne noise signal is detected and evaluated with respect to the collision of the object with the vehicle. Release of devices of a passenger protection system takes place depending on the acceleration signal and the structure-borne noise signal. A parameter, which influences the release of the acceleration algorithm, is adapted depending on the noise signal.
