The damper has a tubular housing (1) with a central longitudinal axis (4), and a piston-rod-unit (5) movably supported in the housing in a direction of the central longitudinal axis. A damping unit damps a relative displacement between the piston-rod-unit and the housing. The piston-rod-unit has a length-adjusting-unit, which is formed by a length-adjustable gas spring (12). The gas spring has another housing that is formed by an external pipe (13), a piston rod (15) that is adjustably arranged in the latter housing and a valve (24) that is operable from outside of the former housing.
