The method involves providing a tread on a building drum by continuous spiral coiling of material strips (10) made of rubber compound. The tread or tread base (4) is coiled on an expandable and retractable auxiliary drum, and cut through at a position crosswise to a periphery of the auxiliary drum. An already developed tire belt packet and/or the tread base are positioned and pressed on the auxiliary drum, and are again welded at section planes. The cut is performed diagonally to radial direction and axial direction.
