The method involves defining a sequence of manufacturing steps for processing a workpiece (6). A schedule for the workpiece is determined on the basis of the sequence of the steps. A route of the workpiece is determined on the basis of the schedule. The route of the workpiece is automatically adapted to conditions of work stations (40). A transfer system (1) is operated in a mixed-model operation to transport the workpiece between different work stations. A control of the workpiece is carried out through a main computer (2) on the basis of the schedule stored in the main computer. An independent claim is also included for a transfer system for transporting a workpiece between different work stations.
