The arrangement has a laser (1) for generating a high-energy laser beam (L1) i.e. UV laser beam, which includes a high power density and a beam cross section (q1) given by the laser, and an optical unit that controls the laser beam. An optical element, which transmits or reflects the laser beam, is arranged downstream to the laser in a jet direction of the laser beam. The optical element possesses an optical effect expanding the beam cross section of the laser beam, so that the laser beam leaves the optical unit with a beam cross section (q2). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a laser arrangement for producing a high-energy laser beam.
