The method involves arranging an exhaust gas sensor in flow direction (16) of exhaust gas adjacent to an oxidation catalyzer (13) that changes an exhaust gas component of the gas. High and low concentrations of the gas component before the catalyzer are adjusted during two sets of operating conditions. Conditions of the exhaust gas sensor are adjusted during which high and low interference errors of the exhaust gas sensor are estimated. The interferences of the exhaust gas sensor are completed by a deviating signal behavior of the exhaust gas sensor between the two sets of conditions.
