An automobile with e.g. a V8 engine has two engine control units (10, 12) each linked to the other and one bank of cylinders. Each control unit has a fault memory recording unit. The first control unit has a fault diagnosis section and transmits fault information to the second control unit, provided the fault refers to a component that responds to both units (10, 12). The error code is stored in the second unit fault memory.
