The present invention relates to a method for determining the oxygen supply in the underground parts of a plant, comprising the steps of the recording of an initial state of the carotenoids in the form of a reference value to an above-ground plants part (1) by means of at least one light source (5) and at least one detector (7), of the feeding of oxygen to the underground parts of plants, of determining a change of the carotenoids to an above-ground plants part (1) in the form of a measured value; and a deviation of the measured value of the reference value an oxygen deficiency in subterranean parts of the plant indicates. Furthermore, a mobile sensor system (3) for determining the oxygen supply in the underground part of a living plant as well as the use of this sensor system (3) for safeguarding or yield increase of useful plants as well as the monitoring of the growth conditions in plants.
