The navigation device (1) has a receiving unit for receiving characteristic value of a control unit after connecting the navigation device to the control unit. A memory device is designed to store received characteristic value of the control unit. The navigation device is formed in an operating mode in which the navigation device is not connected to the control unit or the navigation device does not receive the characteristic value of the control unit, to automatically start a theft protection mode. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system comprising a navigation device (2) a method for operating a portable navigation device.
