The device has a measuring device (14) producing a measuring radiation that is directed to a string material (24). A guiding device is provided for the string material, and an adjusting unit (22) is pressed against a lateral surface of the string material. The adjusting unit includes a guide roller (10) with concave guide paths and a pressing roller (18) provided opposite to the guide roller. The guide roller is arranged in a transportation direction (26) of the string material. The guide paths of the guide roller are arranged in a plane.
