Production of light concrete comprises swelling plant material, e.g. wheat, maize or rice, by heating under pressure to form hollow granules. These are mixed with polymer-modified cement and water and the mixture is pressed into molds. Independent claims are included for: (A) use of the light concrete for molding into panels; (B) panels made from the light concrete which are useful in building non-load-bearing walls; and (C) light concrete blocks with cavities for subsequent casting of concrete.
