The unit (3) has a monitoring connection (31) for monitoring an operation of a processing unit (2) i.e. microprocessor. An emergency operation signal output (33) outputs an emergency operation signal, which indicates whether an error is determined during operation of the processing unit. The emergency operation signal corresponds to a signal with a changing level when no error is determined and corresponds to a signal with a constant level, when an error is determined. The signal with changing level passes between a pair of levels. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an evaluation unit for evaluating a emergency operation signal with a receiving unit (2) a method for monitoring the functioning of a processing unit.
