The present invention relates to a gauge and a method for the determination of the diameter or the cross-sectional area of a variable object in its cross-sectional shape, such as, for example, of a stranded conductor. A first measuring disc (02), which has a spiral slot (07) around the center (05) of the measuring disc (02) extends and steadily tapers, is formed by a central axial connection (06) rotatably to a second measuring disc (03), which is connected a continuously from the the center to the edge extending slot that extends in the same direction, as the slot (07) of the first measuring disc (02). A measurement standard (24) for reading of the determined measure is provided on one of the two measurement disks. If the measurement disks (02, 03) are turned against each other, form the overlapping sections of the slots an opening (26), into which the object to be measured is introduced, and by means of a rotation of the measurement disks (02, 03) in relation to each other, the size of the opening (26) is changed. On the material measure (24), the diameter or the cross-sectional area of the remaining opening can be read off.
