The device has a rear retaining surface (209) for limiting a transverse path between an ultimate state, which corresponds to small distance between movable and stationary electrodes (6, 7), and another ultimate state, which corresponds to large distance between the electrodes. The former ultimate state is determined by a contact of electrode tips and a reference point, and a photo sensor produces an electrical connection. An incremental encoder (221) determines a residual electrode length. An independent claim is also included for a method for distance calibration at an electrode pair for producing impulse waves.
