The method involves determining a temperature of a fuel in a position of a fuel system and closing an actual decomposition rate of the fuel based on the temperature. The actual decomposition rate is determined continuously or at discrete times, and the temperature is determined by measuring in the position of the fuel system. The temperature is measured in a return pipe (501) that is guided from an internal-combustion engine (300) to a tank (100) and in another return pipe (502) that is guided from a fuel pump to the tank. An independent claim is also included for a computer program product with program code stored in a machine-readable medium to perform a method for monitoring characteristics of a fuel in a self-ignite internal-combustion engine.
