The method involves the use of high (MV1) and low (MV2) pressure side control valves, whereby the gas exchange valve (1) is subjected to hydraulic pressure and thus opened by opening the high pressure side valve and closing the low pressure side valve and is unloaded and closed by opening the low pressure side valve with the high pressure side valve closed. An independent claim is also included for a controller for implementing the inventive method.
