The device has an evaluating device (5) in which the body temperature of an animal is calculated based on a preset temperature formula using a temperature difference of temperatures measured from two temperature sensors (2, 4). A compensation term expands the temperature formula. The compensation term is based on a temporal change of a sensor temperature and forms a temperature corrective value. The temperature corrective value allows the dependence of heating of a sensor housing (1) and/or an area surrounded by the sensor housing, via a main contact of the sensor housing with the body. An independent claim is also included for a method for measuring body temperature of an animal.
