The method involves transmitting a parameter to a portable data carrier i.e. chip card (10), by using a certificate, where the parameter configures storage properties of the carrier with respect to public keys. The parameter is logically associated with conditions, which are stored in the carrier or in an entity. The parameter is configured to parameterize an import commando, with which the keys are imported using the certificate. The parameter is configured to parameterize a preparation commando. The keys are stored in the carrier according to ISO/IEC 7816-8standard. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a portable data carrier comprising a memory for storing keys (2) a configuration module utilized in a portable data carrier (3) a system for storing keys (4) a computer program product directly loaded in a memory of a computer.
