The seat (4) and cover (3) swing about an axis (2), between the open and closed positions. The axis is spaced above the upper edge of the toilet bowl (1). The cover projects forward, when seen in side view, just above the axis. It presses against and supports the small of the back, or lumbar region. The cover also includes a projection at the rear (not visible). This is located below the axis when the cover is open. The projection has a stop surface facing the user. This holds the cover against the resting pressure of the user's back, at a set angle.
