Improve the adhesion of polymer coatings to bipolar plate surfaces using silane coupling agents

The present invention provides an electroconductive element for an electrochemical cell element with increased protection for an underlying metal substrate having a surface susceptible to formation of metal oxides. One or more areas of the surface are coated with a metal coating coated with an adhesion-promoting coating containing a silicon-containing material derived from organosilanes. The adhesion promoting coating is coated with a conductive polymer protective coating. The present invention further provides methods of making such an electrochemical cell element to provide improved adhesion of conductive polymer protective coatings.
