The method involves detecting gases, where detection takes place in a measuring cycle. The measuring cycle is divided into an initialization phase and a measuring phase. A voltage or a current sequence is impressed on the electrode system during the initialization phase. The electrode system is loaded during the measuring phase, by switching a load resistance between an exhaust electrode and other electrode. The electrode voltage, the electrode current and the voltage difference are measured during the measuring phase. The solid electrolyte (14) is yttrium stabilized zirconium-oxide.
