Tetrahydropyran compound (I) is new. Tetrahydropyran compound of formula (I) is new. R 1, X 1 : 1-15C-alkyl, 1-15C-alkoxy, 2-15C-alkenyl, 2-15C-alkenyloxy (all optionally substituted with halo) or H, where one or more CH 2 groups are optionally substituted with -C?=C-, -CH=CH-, -CF=CF-, -O-, -(CO)O- or -O(CO)-, where the O atoms are not directly bonded; ring A 1, ring A 2 : 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-cyclohexenylene or 1,4-cyclohexadienyl, which is optionally substituted with 1-3 F; L 1, L 2 : H or F; and either m : 0 or 1; and n : 1-3; or m+n : greater than are equal to 2. Where one of the residues of R 1 and X 1 is F, Cl, CN, NCS or SF 5. Independent claims are included for: (1) the preparation of (I); (2) a liquid crystal medium comprising at least two mesogenic compounds containing (I); and (3) an electrooptical liquid crystal display comprising the liquid crystal medium.
