The chain stretcher (10) comprises a housing, in which a cylinder chamber is defined. A piston (14) is mounted in the cylinder chamber and defines a pressure chamber in the housing. A stepped retaining recess is formed in the inner circumference of the cylinder chamber, where the recess has a depressed and a flat part. A joint recess is formed in an outer circumference of the piston. The retaining ring is configured to be connected with the flat part of the retaining and the joint recess, to retain the piston in a pressed condition in the housing.
