Production of composite ceramic/metal materials comprises filling a mold (1) 60 -95% full with a ceramic material or graphite. The material is heated to a maximum of 90% of the melting point of the metal and molten metal is then poured in. The mold is placed in a sealed chamber which is then evacuated, so that the production of gas bubbles (6) in the melt (4) is controlled. Evacuation is stopped when no more bubbles are produced.
