The process starts at a first instant in time (t01), when a fibrous band is fed in. At a second instant (t02) the loose thread end is fed for spinning-on, into the spinning unit. At a third instant (t03) the spun-on thread is pulled out from the spinning unit. Simultaneously or subsequently, as the thread is wound onto the winding spool, during the winding phase (AP), acceleration takes place. This is controlled to increase the winding velocity (3) in a series of stages, or continuously over a smooth profile, and then to reduce it. The winding velocity (3) is controlled at zero, at the start and/or end of the winding phase (AP). An operational phase (BP) follows the winding phase. During this, the spool is driven by a common drive unit serving further spinning stations, or by a common drive unit. The spool is decoupled from its drive unit during the winding phase, and is rotated using an auxiliary drive. Decoupling is effected by raising the spool using a drive roller, or by use of a clutch. Speed ranges and ratios used in the foregoing operations are quantified. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the corresponding textile machine.
