The system has a set of electrodes (12a-12n) e.g. solid electrical conductor, arranged to be attached to a patient at one of the standard ten-electrode positions. An ECG lead interpretation algorithm database (18) has a set of interpretation algorithms. A signal processor (14) is connected to the electrodes, and arranged for receiving electrocardiographic signals from the electrodes and for generating a twelve lead electrocardiogram from the signals based upon the algorithm. The processor identifies the combination of the electrodes, and selects the corresponding algorithm from the database. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a medical device for receiving electrocardiographic signals from a patient and analyzing the signals to produce a diagnosis of patient condition (2) a method for analyzing electrocardiographic signals of a patient.
