The method involves measuring solid densities of basic color images successively printed on a printing paper (P) using basic color inks, and measuring gray balance for correcting color balance between the images. Differences between the measured solid density values and preset target solid density values, and difference between measured and preset target gray balance values are computed. Amount of each basic color to be supplied by each of a set of ink fountain keys is adjusted by a control section of a color printing press (100) based on the differences. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for controlling the quality of printed images of a color printing press.
