The substrate for growing plants comprise an upper layer (2) of porous polyester material and a lower layer (3) of a second porous material. This has better water-retaining properties than the upper layer. Independent claims are included for: (A) a plant growth medium made from the substrate, in the form of blocks, cylinders or mats; and (B) terraria and paludaria (combined aquaria and terraria) containing the substrate.
