Preparation of polyester alcohol (I) comprises catalytic conversion of at least an difunctional carboxylic acid with at least an difunctional alcohol, where at least a part of the reaction is carried out in the presence of a polymetal cyanide catalyst. Independent claims are included for: (1) the polyester alcohol obtained by the above process; and (2) a mixture comprising the polyester alcohol and double metal cyanide (DMC) catalysts (less than 100 ppm to 1 wt.%) or their dismantling products.
