Four planetary gear (20,30,40,50) sets are used. One interconnecting component (70,72) connects the ring gear (34) of the first set with the sun gear (42) of the third set. Another interconnecting component connects the sun gears (22,52) of the first and fourth sets. Five torque-transmitting devices (80,82,84-86) are engaged in combinations of three to establish eight forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio between the input part (17) and output part (19).
