The plate (1) has a baseplate (2) exhibiting embossed characters (4). The baseplate includes multiple punch holes (6) that penetrate the base plate over an entire thickness. A foil (3) is applied on an outer side of the base plate, where characters (5) are arranged on the foil. The foil is translucent over an entire surface (5') and is opaque in a region of the characters (5). The characters (4) embossed on the base plate are covered by the characters (5) on the foil during the application of the foil. The characters (4) are embossed on the base plate after the application of the foil. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a license plate for a motor vehicle.
