A method for evaluating core (10) stack (18) pressure includes: positioning a magnetic yoke (12, 112, 212, 312, 412) near the core, the magnetic yoke being wound by an excitation winding (14); supplying current to the excitation winding to inject magnetic flux into the core; measuring a signal resulting from the injected magnetic flux; and using the measured signal to evaluate the core stack pressure. A system (56) for implementing the method includes the magnetic yoke; a current supply (30) for supplying the current; a sensor (32 or 36) for measuring the signal; and a computer (28) for using the measure signal to evaluate core stack pressure.
