In the distillation of solid organic materials (A) by heating ground (A) in chip form on a supporting grid (7) in the base of a reaction column (1) using recycled hot reaction gas, the energy supplied by hot gas at the base of the column ensures the breaking of organic bonds in (A) and distillation is controlled based on the hot gas inlet temperature (T1) and the temperature (T2) of (A) on the grid. When (T1) and (T2) are identical, the batch of carbonized (A) is recovered. A method for treating solid organic materials (A) involves: introducing ground (A) in chip form into a reaction column (1); heating (A) in the base (1A) of the column (which is cooled in the upper part), supported on a movable grid (7); introducing the hot reaction gas (of low oxygen content) into the base of the column and transferring the gas into the column and a recycling circuit for the exhaust gas, incorporating a hot gas generator (4), a burner (5), a blower (6) and a recycled gas reintroduction system; and removing the carbonized material produced in the lower part of the column by controlling the movable grid. The novel features are that distillation is carried out using energy supplied by hot gas at the base of the column, to ensure the breaking of organic bonds in (A); and distillation is carried out under constant control in proportion to the hot gas temperature (T1) at the bottom inlet of the column and the material temperature (T2) in the column above the grid. When the temperatures (T1) and (T2) are (almost) identical (corresponding to elimination of all of the organic bonds in (A) by evaporation and upward hot gas transport in the column), the batch of material is evacuated at this temperature to recover a product consisting mainly of carbon, forming a secondary starting material.
