The system (3) has a conduit (6) for injecting a gaseous reducing agent e.g. carbon monoxide, in an exhaust gas conveyed inside an exhaust line (1). A heater plug (7) is arranged inside the exhaust line and permits oxidation and reduction of the injected gaseous reducing agent. The heater plug is arranged downstream of the conduit by considering an exhaust gas circulation direction inside the exhaust line. An independent claim is also included for an oxidation method for purifying an exhaust gas for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
