The process for the treatment of natural gas having methane and carbon dioxide, comprises deacidifying the natural gas to obtain a deacidified natural gas and a carbon dioxide rich stream, transforming a part of deacidified natural gas to obtain a gaseous mixture by a vapor reforming reaction in presence of water at a pressure and temperature of 5-60 bars and 500-1000[deg]C, reacting the gaseous mixture with methanol to produce an effluent at a pressure and temperature of 1-100 bars and 50-400[deg]C, and contacting the carbon dioxide rich stream with hydrogen rich stream. The process for the treatment of natural gas having methane and carbon dioxide, comprises deacidifying the natural gas to obtain a deacidified natural gas and a carbon dioxide rich stream, transforming a part of deacidified natural gas to obtain a gaseous mixture by a vapor reforming reaction in presence of water at a pressure and temperature of 5-60 bars and 500-1000[deg]C, reacting the gaseous mixture with methanol to produce an effluent at a pressure and temperature of 1-100 bars and 50-400[deg]C, and contacting the carbon dioxide rich stream with hydrogen rich stream to produce a hydrogenation reaction and a mixture of methane and water at a pressure and temperature of 5-150 bars and 100-500[deg]C. The effluent is separated in a formic ester rich stream and the hydrogen rich stream. The mixture of methane and water is separated in a methane rich fraction and a water rich fraction, which is recycled to the transforming step. The gaseous mixture has a molar ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide of 3-4 moles/mole. The vapor reforming reaction is adjusted so that a part of methane is not consumed.
