The device (D) has target elements (EC1, EC2) e.g. cam, integrated to a camshaft (AC) to represent functioning of the camshaft. The element (EC1) has discriminatory portions angularly moved with respect to discriminatory portions of the element (EC2). Sensors (C1, C2) respectively deliver signals (S1, S2) representing passage of each discriminatory portion of the former element at a chosen zone. A processing module (MT) combines the signals by an exclusive OR operation to deliver a combined state signal (SE1) representing the passages and used to synchronize an internal combustion engine (M).
