The field of the invention is that of devices for detecting non-metallic objects concealed on human subjects. The device for detecting dielectric objects according to the invention comprises at least one detector comprising an enclosure (10) in which are arranged a transmitter (14) emitting a microwave signal and a microwave receiver (15), said enclosure: has a measuring surface (11) having at least two holes (12); is highly reflective of the wave emitted by the transmitter; has a volume greater than about the cube of the wavelength so that the number of possible resonance modes within the enclosure is greater than about one thousand; has a chaotic geometry for said modes; comprises at least one device (13) called a mode mixer arranged to change the characteristics of the enclosure in a variable manner during the time of a measurement so as to explore a significant fraction of said modes. A processing device connected to this device The detector correlates the measured signals with pre-recorded signals to determine the presence of suspicious objects.
