The method involves deactivating a default operating mode of a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server (20), and activating a degraded operating mode of the server using an activating/deactivating unit (23) of the server. A predefined response is transmitted by the server in response to a lease extending or allocating request transmitted by one of a set of terminals (T1-T4) in the degraded operating mode. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a configuration data allocating device (2) a computer program comprising program code instructions for implementing a configuration data allocating method (3) a data storage medium on which the computer program is stored for executing the allocating method.
