The method involves transporting sheet metal parts (1, 2) towards assembling position and assembling the parts with each other. The assembled parts are transported towards a station by one of two robots. Each robot carries a support tool (3, 4) for one of the parts. Each tool has a locking unit (5) cooperating with complementary locking units of the tool carried by the other robot for defining a geometric assembling position of the two parts. The units (5) are unlocked to permit one of the robots to transport the parts towards another station in the tools (3, 4) of the robots. An independent claim is also included for a support tool used in sheet metal parts assembling and transporting method.
