The method involves detecting a word of N binary elements (VNd) in a received decided signal (Vd). An allowable word (WNa) of N binary elements is selected in a dictionary of error correction code implemented at the encoding, according to a short distance criterion between the detected word and the selected allowable word. A word of L binary elements constituting a decoded signal (dL) is provided from the selected allowable word, where the distance considers relative reliabilities of 2 power K sequences of K binary elements in which K lies between 0 and N.
