The method involves displacing a calibration unit (42) along with a movable unit (26a, 26b) of a mechanical assembly (10). Displacement of the unit (42) is measured by a reference sensor (44). Parameters of a correction function is determined based on association between values measured by a movable unit's position measurement sensor (30A, 30B) and corresponding values measured by the sensor (44). The movable unit is displaced, and its position is measured. Corrected position of the movable unit is calculated based on position measured by the sensor (30A, 30B) and correction function sensor.
