A method for the production of methacrylate copolymers by radical polymerisation,involves the polymerisation of methacrylate monomers in presence of (a) initiators,(b) transfer agents of the RAFT type capable of generating primary radicals and (c) comonomers such as acrylates,styrenes and other ethylenic compounds. A method (M1) for the production of methacrylate copolymers (I) involves the polymerisation of methacrylate monomer(s) in presence of (a) initiators,preferably peroxides,azo compounds or redox and/or alkoxyamine systems,(b) transfer agents of the "RAFT" type capable of generating primary radicals of formula Z-CS-S-R in which R : -CH2R1; R1 : alkyl,a cyclic group (carbo- or hetero-cyclic saturated,unsaturated or aromatic),alkylthio,alkoxy or diallylamino (all optionally substituted),an organometallic group,a polymer chain or a radical R. liberating free radicals which can initiate polymerisation; Z : H,chlorine,alkyl,aryl,heterocyclyl,alkylthio (-SR2),alkoxycarbonyl,aryloxycarbonyl,(-COOR2), -COOH or acyloxy (-OOCR2) (all optionally substituted),carbamoyl (-CONR2; optionally substituted with CN),dialkyl- or diaryl-phosphonato (-P(O)OR22) or phosphinato (-P(O)R22),a polymer chain,-OR2 or -NR2R3; R2,R3 : 1-18C alkyl,2-18C alkenyl,aryl,heterocyclyl,aralkyl or alkylaryl (all optionally substituted with groups such as epoxy,OH,alkoxy,acyl,acyloxy,COOH (and salts),sulfonic acid (and salts),alkoxy- or aryloxy-carbonyl,NCO,CN,silyl,halogen or dialkylamino) and (c) comonomer(s) selected from styrenes,acrylic monomers,acrylonitrile,(meth)acrylamides,4-acryloylmorpholine, N-methylol-(meth)acrylamide,(meth)acrylamidopropyl-trimethyl-ammonium chloride,acrylamidomethylpropanesulfonic acid (or salts),itaconic acid,maleic acid (or salts or anhydride),alkyl maleates or hemi-maleates or similar esters of alkoxy- or aryloxy-polyalkylene glycols,vinyl-pyridine or -pyrrolidone,polyethylene glycol mono- or di-vinyl ether,olefins (e.g. ethylene,propylene,butene,hexene or 1-octene),fluoro-monomers and/or vinylidene monomers (e.g. VDF or preferably VDC). Independent claims are also included for (1) a method (M2) for the preparation of block copolymers with at least one block (A) comprising methacrylate units,in which (A) is/are obtained by method M1 (2) copolymers obtained by M1 and M2 .
