A method for the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons in presence of a catalyst (I) comprising a noble metal (M) (platinum, palladium, rhodium or iridium), promoter(s) (X1) (tin, germanium or lead), an alkali or alkaline earth compound and a porous support, in which the ratio X1/M = 0.3-8, the ratio H ir/M measured by the adsorption of hydrogen is more than 0.40 and the bimetallicity index (IBM) measured by hydrogen/oxygen titration is more than 108.
