The method involves calculating a difference between voltage measurements at terminals of a battery powering an electrical element e.g. e.g. electric immersion heater, for detecting any change in an operating state of the electrical element. Activation of the electrical element at an instant is controlled, and a counter defining a measuring time (Tmes) is triggered. The voltage at the terminals of the battery measured at the instant from the activation of the electrical element is filtered and stored. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling an electrical element of an engine, comprising a measuring unit.
