The source has an active medium constituted by a solid crystal in a form of a thin strip (71) having two main sides and four secondary sides. The secondary sides are formed of two transversal sides (77-84) and two longitudinal sides (73, 74). A pumping unit (90) pumps the crystal in a direction of one of the secondary sides, and a single cavity output mirror (99) is provided outside the strip. The two of the transversal sides of the secondary sides are adjacent to each other and makes the obtuse angle between them. The strip is covered by a low refractive index material i.e. sapphire. The solid crystal is chosen from holmium/thulium/erbium doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG), holmium/thulium/erbium doped Yttrium orthoaluminate (YALO), holmium/thulium/erbium doped yttrium orthovanadate (YVO4) or holmium/thulium/erbium doped potassium gadolinium tungstate.
