The device has a retractable stop (10) located at a free edge (1a) of a casement e.g. side door (1), and supported by the casement. The stop is fixed against an external surface of the casement in a retracted position when the casement is in closed position. The stop is inclined towards the exterior of the vehicle in a deployed position when the casement is in open position for protecting the casement from an obstacle during opening of the casement. A roller is provided at a free end of an external part (11) of the stop and comprising an elastomer covering.
