Grafting functional groups on textiles, e.g. for production of battery separators, involves grafting a functional molecule with ionising radiation by bridging with a radiation-reactive surfactant
A method for grafting functional groups onto textile substrates (TS) by impregnating the TS with a solution of a compound with a functional group and a group which is reactive under ionising radiation, in which the solution also contains a surfactant which improves the wettability of the TS and also has at least two types of radiation-reactive groups, so that exposure to ionising radiation ensures grafting of the functional molecules by bridging with the surfactant molecules. Independent claims are also included for (1) textile substrates in which at least one surface is grafted with functional chemical groups by means of bridging with surfactant molecules as above (2) battery separators comprising a textile substrate grafted with sulfonic groups and phosphoric and/or carboxylic groups by the above method .
