The method involves preparing a carbon aerogel in a form of powder to form a composite material with an ionomer i.e. PTFE, where a harmol sulfate is transplanted on the ionomer. The aerogel is impregnated with a composition comprising metallic salt in an aqueous medium. The salt is reduced from the aerogel utilizing an alkaline hydride aqueous solution. The impregnation of the aerogel and the reduction of the metallic salt are performed simultaneously to maintain a concentration in a metal lower than a threshold concentration to form catalyst particles e.g. platinum particles. An independent claim is also included for a method for preparing a fuel cell electrode with a proton exchanging membrane and a gas electrode.
