The engine has a housing with a piston (5) provided in a cylindrical bore. A fuel injector is controlled by electronic control units and injects the fuel in an open angle sheet (N1) and a narrow angle sheet (N2). The piston has a central cavity (22) co-operating with the sheets when the piston reaches a top dead centre. The cavity has an annular projection (27) for determining a lower annular basin (26) surrounding a central protuberance i.e. pilot point, and a lateral annular groove (25) surrounding the basin, where the groove and the basin receives the sheets respectively.
