The method involves transmitting packets (6', 7') to an iterative decoder (21). Flexible symbols (22) resulting from decoding of the packets are transmitted to a cyclic redundancy code decoder (11). The decoding is stopped when an error indicator (12') from the decoder (11) does not signal an error. The number of iterations (Nit) carried out by the decoder (21) is compared to a maximum value when the indicator signals the error. The following decoding iteration is executed and decoding operation is stopped when the number of iterations is less than and greater than the value, respectively. An independent claim is also included for a device for optimized decoding of data.
